Today is another quiet day for the stable, as we have no runners today. However, there is jumps racing at Cheltenham this afternoon, which is their first day of their two day meeting and Flat action at Kempton and Newmarket to look forward to. Beverley and Gowran Park were scheduled for today, but have been abandoned.
Cheltenham is returning today for the first time since the Gold Cup at the festival. Cheltenham have around £210,000 of prize money on offer for this meeting today and the British trainers are taking every chance to close the gap for the trainer’s title, which Irish trainer Willie Mullins is the current leader of after his National win. Dan Skelton is sending 7 runners there today, while Paul Nicholls is sending 4. This meeting is usually welcomed with open arms from the British trainers, as there is a chance of never having a Mullins trained runner! He is not represented on the Wednesday card, but is on Thursday in the fillies’ juvenile handicap hurdle with Karia Des Blaises. This meeting will not determine who will win the title, but it would certainly help the opposition in drawing the gap.
The first day of the Craven meeting kicked off yesterday at Newmarket and today the 1,000 Guineas entrants are put to the test in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes which takes place at 3:35pm.
This years grand national winner I Am Maximus took to the tradition of parading the streets of the quaint County Carlow town of Leighlinbridge not long after Galopin Des Champs paraded through the streets for his Gold Cup win at the Cheltenham Festival. I Am Maximus is now joint sixth-best chaser in Ireland too. I saw plenty of photos of the parade itself and it certainly looked like I Am Maximus found his efforts in the grand national a lot easier that most winners - he was bouncing around full of it straight after! So I'm sure plenty of big days are still ahead of this talented horse.
In the football last night there were two Quarter-Finals in the Champions League, Barcelona 1-4 Paris Saint Germain. Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Atletico Madrid. Tonight there are two more quarter-final matches in the Champions League. Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal and Manchester City vs. Real Madrid and they are both set to kick off at 8pm.
Why should you always knock before opening a fridge door?
In case there's a salad dressing!
Happy Wednesday!
