There's only one more day left until the season kicks off again, but we have day 4 of the Punchestown Festival to keep us occupied until then. The Boodles Champion Hurdle takes place at 6:00pm and 4 runners step up to the challenge - 2 of them being for Willie Mullins who yesterday, broke his own record by having the most Grade 1 victories in a season! The favourite is State Man and he currently has a perfect 4-4 strike rate at Punchestown, so he will be looking to add to that! Champion Hurdle runner up, Irish Point will be looking to go one better this time round as they go head to head again!
In more news from Punchestown, I saw that Kenny Alexander’s famous silks for Honeysuckle were being auctioned last night, the silks themselves were only used for Honeysuckle when she ran and I thought it was a lovely tribute and extremely special. The silks were auctioned for 105,000 euros and they will now be displayed at the Irish National Stud. The money made will be going to support the new ChildVision Equine Centre in Drumcondra, in Dublin. The centre is to be named in memory of Jack De Bromhead, son of trainer Henry De Bromhead who sadly died in a pony racing accident in 2022.
Goodwood, Musselburgh, Newmarket and Newcastle have some exciting flat action to watch. Cheltenham are hosting their annual hunter chase evening meeting tonight, so there’s some jumps action to watch as we approach into the new season tomorrow!
Kauto Star Novices’ chase winner in December and French trained Il Est Francais is set to miss the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris on 19th May, after his defeat run last time out in the Prix Murat and a slightly flat piece of work which took place Thursday morning. They are set to turn him out to grass for a few months now and he was so impressive on Boxing Day, hopefully after a little holiday, he will be back to his best again.
Last night for the football in the English Premier League Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur. Tonight, the English Premier League action continues and Luton Town take on Everton, which kicks off at 8pm.
What do you call a starving Hippo in Budapest?
