First Lord Du Cuet - Winner at Buckfastleigh
We start the new week with two jumps meetings at Fontwell and Southwell but the stable does not have any runners. We did have Missy Mole declared to run at Southwell but she was made a non-runner yesterday. In Ireland, they have two jumps cards at Wexford and Down Royal while the all-weather action comes from Wolverhampton this evening.
On Saturday, Jilaijone and Phantomofthepoints both ran well enough at Uttoxeter without troubling the judge. Both horses are high enough in the weights at the moment and the ground was softer than ideal for Jilaijone. Hopefully the handicapper wll give them some help and there will be easier opportunities for both of them.
We did have a winner over the weekend, courtesy of First Lord Du Cuet getting of the mark in his first British point to point start at Buckfastleigh on Sunday. He won the novice riders conditions race partnered by Rian Corcoran and he won it quite easily. Our eleven year old has struggled to get his head in front under rules for a little while and took a tumble when last in action at Taunton while holding every chance. David decided to let him have a go in point to points to get his confidence back with the aim of going back under rules after this. It was a case of mission accomplished and I am sure we will be looking for another similar race in a few weeks time. On Saturday, we ran African Lady and Royal Defender at Cothelstone point to point. African Lady ran well again to be a close fourth while Royal Defender unfortunately fell four out when travelling strongly. Horse and jockey are absolutely fine which is the main thing.
It was a great weekend of sporting action and France were crowned Six Nations rugby champions after beating Scotland 35-16 in Paris. Earlier in the day, England had thrashed Wales while Ireland won away to Italy. It has been a great few weeks of International rugby.
Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup final at Wembley beating Liverpool 2-1. This was their first trophy for many years and it was a great result from the Toon army, fans like Ant and Dec and Alan Shearer were very happy!
I enjoyed watching some of the golf from Sawgrass last night at the Players Championship. Play was delayed for several hours due to the threat of lightening and when it resumed it only just finished before dark. Rory McIlroy and JJ Spaun finished joint top on 12 under but they could not play the play off holes because of lack of daylight. Those two players will come back today to play holes 16,17 and 18 to decide a winner at 1pm (our time) today.
Lando Norris won the first Formula 1 Grand Prix of the year in Melbourne. It was an incident packed Australian Grand Prix and Norris beat Max Verstappen into second place.
"What are your dog's names?"
Me "Calvin & Klein".
"Isn't that a brand of underwear?"
Me "Exactly, they're Boxers!"
Happy Monday!
