Another day and another blank afternoon for jumping. I know we are now in what you would term the "summer jumping season", but you would expect at least one card of National Hunt action. Even in the depths of winter we are normally "treated" to at least one all-weather flat card! Anyway, today's meetings take place at Windsor, Leicester, Kempton and Carlisle. Frankie Dettori makes a rared visit to Leicester - I would imagine that he is probably going there for some sort of good thing - let's hope that he can find it! At least the jumps are back tomorrow and we will be having a couple of runners at Hexham - it's not exactly west country and will be a long journey north, but it's better than nothing!

I was watching the racing from Fakenham yesterday afternoon and was rather surprised to see John Ferguson's odds-on favourite Art History get turned over. This useful ex-flat recruit didn't look at all straight forward to me and would certainly be one to avoid, particularly at short odds. Over in Ireland, So You Think was massively impressive in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh over 1m2 1/2f, winning the Group One contest by no less than six lengths. It would be some clash if he were to meet Frankel over this sort of trip later in the season. It was a good day too for Mick Channon who landed his first Classic of his long career when winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Samitar, so well done to him.

If you are anywhere near Walton Heath Golf Club today it would be worth dropping in as it is the qualifying event for the US Open and there are a number of good players taking part, including Colin Montgomerie. Colin has been a great player through the years, but while I am sure he wouldn't thank me for saying it, unfortunately his best golfing days appear to be behind him.

What a credit to boxing Carl Froch is. He put up a great performance to win the IBF super-middleweight title in front of 10,000 fans in his home town of Nottingham on Saturday night. Froch destroyed the previously unbeaten Canadian Lucian, but he seldom gets the credit he deserves - he is not noisy or flashy, but is one of only four British fighters to win three world titles. In fact he is probably one of the finest British fighters of the last half century.
