There are six meetings on today, with five flat fixtures from Haydock, Ascot, Kempton, Thirsk and Wolverhampton as well as a jumps card at Stratford. The stable has a couple of runners this afternoon at Stratford, Prime Design in the seller and His Excellency in the competitive handicap hurdle - the £12,000 prize money has attracted a good field of sixteen runners. The place to be for top quality action though is undoubtedly Haydock - with a Group One and two Listed races on the card it looks like being a great day's racing.

Looking further ahead, I see that the stable's Premier Dane is 9/1 co-favourite for the Kerry National that takes place at Listowel on 19th September. The ten year old is now unbeaten in three starts since joining the yard and does not incur a penalty for his most recent success in the valuable handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot last weekend. David tells me that there is a fair chance that this will be his next race.

Forget the Premiership this weekend, tomorrow the big match takes place in Minehead as a team of players made up from staff at Pond House, Philip Hobbs' and Paul Nicholls' stables take on a Newmarket XI. I know that the boys are hyped up to win this one as the Newmarket lads are supposed to be quite handy - let's just hope that there are not too many ringers in the sides! The undoubted star turn from Pond House is definitely our part-time handyman Matt Zadel who is highly skilled in a number of positions (or so he tells me!). With Gerry Supple donning the managers tracksuit, it should be an entertaining match!

While we are on the subject of high quality football, you had to be impressed with England last night as they dispatched Moldova 5-0. While it is fair to say that the Moldova side weren't a great bunch (and may have struggled to score against the Stable Lad's XI) you can only beat what is put in front of you, and they did so professionally. I hope that a few of you took the even money that was available about England winning and Moldova not scoring. Having listened to the other press conferences following the World Cup Qualifiers last night, it occurred to me that every one of the losing managers blamed poor referees and not one of them said that the better side had won!

I cannot believe that one of our former conditional jockeys, Martin Foster is 42 today. "Foghorn" was champion conditional for MCP and could also box a bit...I certainly never took the mickey out of him! Many happy returns Martin.
