Unfortunately our sole runner at Ffos Las yesterday, High Ville fell at the third hurdle which was quite a surprise when you consider that six of the hurdles were ommited due to the low sun. There are five meetings taking place this afternoon, four on the flat at Royal Ascot, Redcar, Newmarket and Goodwood as well as a jumps card at Market Rasen. What a performance from Leading Light yesterday in the Ascot Gold Cup - it was a thrilling finish with Joseph O'Brien giving his mount a great ride to just deny the Queen's Estimate back to back wins in the race. A drop back in trip to two miles looks like the order of the day for the four year old...could he be the next Yeats?

There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with five on the level from Royal Ascot, Ripon, Southwell, Leicester and Lingfield as well as a jumps card from Ffos Las. Somehow Southwell have managed to get away with £28,000 in prize money for their seven race card...how low can prize money go?! The stable has one runner today; High Ville (pictured above) who goes in the handicap hurdle at Ffos Las at 7.45pm. Our eight year old was twice a winner last term, most recently from a mark of 107 at Uttoxeter and while he finished runner-up a couple of times subsequently a revised mark of 125 suggests that the handicapper overreacted. He should run creditably, although I would certainly like to see him with a few pounds off his back!

I thought that our mare Western Diva ran okay to finish runner-up at Stratford yesterday afternoon and suggested that she could pick up something similar in due course. However, you would hope not to bump into another one like winner Supreme Present who looks very useful (especially for this time of year) - you would imagine that her handicap mark of 120 would be taking a bit of a hammering from the handicapper. There are five meetings taking place this afternoon, with three on the flat from Royal Ascot, Hamilton and Ripon as well as jumping action from Uttoxeter and Southwell.

It is the start of Royal Ascot's five day meeting this afternoon and that meeting unsurprisingly headlines five fixtures taking place this afternoon. There are other flat meetings at Thirsk, Nottingham and Brighton while the jumps action comes from Stratford. It is a case of different worlds this afternoon with over £1million up for grabs at Royal Ascot, while over at Brighton there is the paltry grand total of £28,000 to be competed for across their entire meeting...I suppose at least you get to see the sand and sea of sunny Brighton and if you are lucky enough to own a winner you could even buy yourself an ice cream (just)!

There are four meetings taking place this afternoon - three on the flat at Carlisle, Nottingham and Windsor as well as a jumps card from Newton Abbot. Once again it is another good effort from our local track to have the second most prize money on offer this afternoon. The stable has one runner; Purple 'N Gold (pictured above) who goes in the handicap hurdle at 3.30pm. He has been in decent form once again and I would imagine that stable jockey Tom Scudamore will be producing this one as late as possible. He was a good fourth in a very competitive race at Stratford at the end of last month and had he jumped the last flight better he would have finished second at worst. There is only a short run-in after the last at Newton Abbot so Scu will need to be at his very sharpest.

It's a quiet day on the racing front with only two meetings, both on the flat at Doncaster and Salisbury. At least the Salisbury card features a Listed contest with £22,684 in prize money up for grabs - with so much lovely warm weather at the moment though, the ground is going to be plenty lively enough. Having said that, I see that Ascot was hit by an unexpected 15mm deluge of rain on Friday night ahead of their Royal meeting next week. That came just hours after they had put 14mm of water on the track, changing the going from good (good/firm in places) to good/soft (good in places). Even so, with no further rain forecast before the start of the meeting I would be surprised if the ground was any slower than good.

I'm afraid that if you like your National Hunt action and you live anywhere other than the north of England you are out of luck today. There are no fewer than eight meetings taking place this afternoon but only one of those is over the sticks at Hexham. The flat cards come from York, Musselburgh, Sandown, Chester, Bath, Leicester and Lingfield. I see the winner of the seller at York yesterday was bought back in by trainer Kevin Ryan for £11,000, while the runner-up was claimed for £12,000. The good news is that the course made a few quid - they should have more sellers like these with a worthwhile prize up for grabs.
