I thought that Bathwick Quest posted a fair effort when finishing runner-up at Hereford yesterday evening under Tom Scudamore in the novices' handicap chase.  She jumped well and made a valiant attempt to make all the running but in the end finished second to Numen.  She could probably do with a little bit of help from the handicapper, although having said that, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the winner follow-up under a penalty before the assessor gets a chance to revise his rating.

Talking of Tom Scu, he spoke with Mike Vince at our recent Garden Party and you can hear of his hopes for the coming season by coming back here tomorrow.

Several cars were damaged at Bath racecourse recently.  Some of the punters that had decided to have a few pints and leave their cars behind came back to find their vehicles dented...they obviously didn't realise that when there is no racing on, the track is part of Lansdowne Golf Course - no prizes for guessing what caused the dents!  I once had a ball go through my windscreen whilst playing at Stover Golf Club - when I complained, I was made to feel like the guilty party as the Steward informed me that the member wasn't too happy as he had to take a penalty drop!

More and more trainers are coming out against proposed changes to the Grand National fences.  Nigel Twiston-Davies (himself a winning trainer) has suggested that the race will end up like a glorified hurdle race and that will be of no interest to anyone.  Personally I think that the media are responsible for this knee jerk reaction - the BBC's coverage at the time was a real shocker...they couldn't have had worse camera angles if they had tried, this in turn led to the media frenzy and the call for the changes to the fences.  It was a terrible shame about the two fatalities and obviously nobody wants to see any of the horses get hurt, but by making the fences smaller, it will only lead to the field going that little bit quicker which will cause it's own problems.

The stable enjoyed a good winner at Market Rasen on Saturday when recent French acquisition Taratata Sivola made a winning debut for the yard in the 2m4f novices' chase, at the same time giving stable jockey a welcome winning return from injury.  He jumped well and battled on bravely to win 1 3/4 lengths - Tom Scu said that he was inclined to go a little bit left, and to me he looked as though the trip was plenty short enough for him, nevertheless I think that he could be well up to following-up and he will not mind softer ground either.

It is good to have Tom Scu back riding today, a couple of days earlier than originally anticipated.  He has a couple of rides for David at Market Rasen this evening. Taratata Sivola is making his Pond House debut in the 6.50pm novice's chase.  Our four year old gets a handy weight allowance in this race and after finishing runner up in a chase at Auteuil last time out we are hoping that he gives Tom a great first ride back.  He also rides My Brother Sylvest in the 8.20pm handicap hurdle for David.  Tom has rides for brother Michael at Southwell tomorrow so he looks to have some good chances of grabbing a winner on his first weekend back.  I personally hope he does and restores some confidence because even though he has been riding out for a couple of weeks at home and he is extremely fir there is nothing like a bit of race riding to get you backon the top of your game.  I bet his wife Lottie will just be glad to get him out of the house as I am sure he has been getting on her nerves the last few months!  Good luck Tom!

Yesterday Bathwick Man was a little disappointing on the flat at Salisbury.  He travelled well but when they quickened he could not quicken with them but of course remember he was a good winner over hurdles at Newton Abbot last week so I am sure he will bounce back to form when we put some obastacles back in front of him again!  In some of yesterday's other action, owner/trainer Mike Sowersby won the selling handicap at Beverley.  He is quoted as saying in the paper "I bought her at Doncaster last week and haven't even paid for her yet!".
