The stable won the feature race at Taunton yesterday as Balgarry jumped well in the main to land the handicap chase under Tom Scudamore.  He is a free-going sort who was granted a soft lead yesterday so things played into his hands somewhat but he still produced a good performance to win this from a mark of 133.  This was only his third start over the larger obstacles and he can go on from here.

There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps action from our local track at Taunton as well as Warwick and Newcastle while there is an all-weather flat fixture from Chelmsford City.  Newcastle get the wooden spoon today as they fork out just £30,000 prize money for their seven race card - it seems to me that it is always the same tracks that cough up the least.  David has three runners at Taunton; Spending Time, Brook and Balgarry - Spending Time won at Huntingdon on his chase debut and followed that up with a good second at Wincanton last time from this mark of 112.  A big run is expected from him.  Brook was disappointing last time at Cheltenham but he had previously scored twice on soft and heavy ground while the free-going Balgarry should be an exhilarating ride for Scu in the 2m2f handicap chase.

The stable was among the winners yesterday as former French recruit Alternatif jumped well to win at Fontwell under a very good ride from Tom Scudamore.  I particularly like the wording in today's Post that says he won "cosily" - he can make up into a decent staying chaser.  I see they also had him labelled as the star performer of the meeting and he will most likely be going back up in grade now.

     Alternatif after Winning at Kempton
Today there are three meetings, jumps cards at Fontwell and Uttoxeter plus a flat card at Southwell.  David has one runner, Alternatif at Fontwell.  He carries top weight in the 3m1f handicap chase at 2.10pm.  He has had two runs over fences and was a good third at Cheltenham last time out on good ground.  He handles soft and with a clear round of jumping he should not be too far away.  Tom Scu rides.  Tom Scu made his trip to Musselburgh worthwhile yesterday with a winner on board Tap Night for trainer Lucinda Russell.

There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with a jumps card from Musselburgh as well as a couple of all-weather flat fixtures from Lingfield and Chelmsford City.  David does not have any runners this afternoon and stable jockey Tom Scudamore travels all the way to Musselburgh for a couple of rides.  The stable horses ran well on Saturday without managing to get their heads in front - I am pleased I do not bet in running as I would have lost money on both Ballywilliam and Top Wood at Chepstow.  Both looked likely winners coming to the last only to get run out of things close home - I am sure their turns are not far away.

There are just two meetings this afternoon with jumps action from both Huntingdon and Kelso.  The big race of the day is most definitely the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon which has been won by some great names down the years including Best Mate, Edredon Bleu, not to mention Sabin du Loir who was such a great servant to Pond House.  Despite a handy £65,000 up for grabs there are only five runners which is a bit disappointing - even the last one home picks up £1742.  I feel sorry for sponsors when big money draws such a small field.

The stable enjoyed another nice winner yesterday afternoon as Fingertips (pictured above) made all the running to land the juvenile hurdle at Sandown under Daryl Jacob.  He won with a bit in hand and recorded a useful performance in the process conceding 10lbs to odds-on favourite Polarisation who was rated 100 on the level.  Granted our fellow jumped much better than the vanquished jolly but this was much more like the form he had shown in France and he looks like a useful prospect for his owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.
